Rumi (1207–73), the great Sufi mystic, expressed through his poetry more than 800 years ago that every human being is born with the innate potential to connect with others, attune to our feelings, trust ourselves and those around us, express our essential needs, and love with an open heart. He intuited what modern psychology would not articulate until many centuries later—that through the process of Complex Childhood Conditioning, we inevitably build barriers to these natural capacities. And yet, these barriers can be softened and gradually removed through dedicated emotional growth and inner development.
